After Paul gives us a rundown of some of the other gifts of the Spirit, in the 13th chapter of 1 Corinthians Paul tells us about the greatest gift of God. In chapter thirteen, modern versions of the Bible translate the Greek word agape into the English word love. The old KJV (King James Version) translates agape into the English word charity. Which word is better translated? Which word is better suited for translation?

While I am not a KJV only preacher, I do agree with the translation “charity“. The reason is the word love has been used to represent the mundane and watered down. For example, people can use the word love to say, “I love God” and “I love cereal” all in the same breath. Love just doesn’t quite do it for me.

Charity, on the other hand, is a word that is best defined as, love with action. If I am charitable to the poor, you understand that I give to the poor. Who can give without compassion or love? In the same, you cannot say, “I charity you” so love is better used here.
